It's June and I'm Planning Next Year

I wanted to share my pacing guide for next year, maybe it can help someone.  Even though my school year is August to May, the blank ppt and pdf are August to June.  I had to turn it in at the end of the school year as part of my check out, but I've been tweaking it slightly over the past couple of weeks since summer started... reflections and all that fun stuff.   Here are my links over on Google Drive:

(PDF for all those other curious people out there).

Blank Powerpoint (Editable) - Just add text boxes and add your own info.

Blank PDF - Just print the background and fill in by hand.

A little information...
*Our RCD ELA unit in 4th grade is actually our Social Studies curriculum.  Pretty cool.
*That means that we are allowed to use novel studies for our ELA block.  We use quite a few materials to support the standards in ELA, but it's so nice not being tied to a mandatory curriculum.
*Next year the district is also implementing RCD Math using a collection of our math adopted curriculum, Engage NY, and an activity book that is all Common Core aligned.  It's going to be a year of learning to juggle 3 math curriculums (plus interactive notebooks).
*I also use Ideas by Jivey Mentor Sentences for grammar, and Nancy Fetzer materials for writing.
*Spelling words comes from Ladybug Teacher's Morphology.
*Last, Science is slowly transitioning from our CA State Standards over to the new NGSS... it's a slow transition.

Hope this helps.  :)

  1. I really loved your pacing guide. It is simple but organized! I tried to use the editable PowerPoint page but when I clicked on it, it was a pdf so I couldn't open it in PowerPoint. I probably just didn't do it right. Anyway, loved this. Thank you for sharing!!!!!!!!

    1. I'm so sorry that I grabbed the wrong link when I was writing the post. Here's the link to the right one - I did fix it in the post too. It should work now to download and then it will open in ppt. Add text boxes with your own info. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwTkS8FKx8pGRVVOcW5GOXFoYXM/view?usp=sharing

  3. Thanks for sharing the templates! We use EngageNY as well, and I'm interested in the math activity book. Can you share more about it?

    1. Hi,
We've only had one training, but this is the link to the book my district gave me. It's a collection of different games, activities, and the why behind teaching it in a certain way. Our next training is coming up in August (right before we start school). My district came up with a plan that takes our my math book, a lot of engage NY, and these activities from the book to dive deep. I'm sorry I don't know much more yet. http://www.textbooks.com/BooksDescription.php?BKN=1290900&SBC=EDN&kpid=9780132824873U&kenshu=0dcc78f7-a60f-73c8-0378-00007062775a&mcid=XKS-7565-39-331-PRIDREPLACE-291&gclid=CNOvlIKyt80CFQdqfgod6C8KjA

  4. We are transitioning to NGSS as well. You should check out this site: njctl.org/courses/science .
I plan to use these units this year to help with the transition. They are aligned to NGSS.

    1. Thank you so much for the info. Our standards are changing so much, and no new text is planned.... I'm so tired of "finding my own material". Thanks again!

  5. Ok, I'm interested in how you do SS in your ELA! In TN, we have so many social studies standards and I would love to integrate it more. What is RCD?

    1. Hello,
RCD is Rigorous Curriculum Development - a trainer came to the district and helped the different grade level teams choose how they were going to integrate the new standards. In 4th grade the team decided to use our SS curriculum and integrated CA History with a lot of the RI and Writing standards (some RF too). For example, our first unit is the regions of CA, so we start the year learning about that, with a focus on RI4.2 (main idea and key details), and then do a project within in that completes the W4.2 standard (write informative/explanatory texts, etc). All the units are set up in the same kind of way, focusing on the big ELA standards. The units that the team created just used the SS topics of CA History to be the storyline... I hope this helps!

  6. Amazing post! Thanks for sharing your "pacing guide" ppt! My interest is piqued with your novel choices for reading...do you actually have copies of all of these? If so, how did you obtain and how many? I would love to have some "current" novels in mass quantities for my students to read.
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hello! Thanks for visiting! I have picked up class sets of novels through Scholastic Book Clubs over the years. Many of the sets are $1 books, or I used my bonus points to get them for a steal. I realized that I needed the kids to hold a copy of the books to get really engaged.
