I'm Addicted to Reading

I love reading in my classroom.  I know I've talked about that before - I adore my Read Aloud time.  During this past year we read 12 books whole class, and I already bought a few more class sets for next year.  I am an official Scholastic Bonus Point/Dollar Book Addict!  In class I carve out time every day after lunch for us to settle down together and read for 15-20 minutes.  It's only enough time for a chapter or two, but enough to get the kids wanting more.  Many of them will continue on with the books during silent reading time.  

This past year I got smart.  I have always read every single page of every single book, but this year I found that website "Audible".  So many of our class read alouds were on there, read by the authors.  Having the authors read the characters the way that they imagined them to be, with different voices, etc... it was amazing!  I downloaded the books onto my iPod and then it was easy to plug into my speakers.  Many of the downloads were cheaper than getting a CD on Amazon.  During the chapters, I was able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the books with my students.  It felt really good to sit for a change...

There is also a chapter summary grid included in both of them (just like my Read Aloud Mini Packs), that the kids responded on.  I LOVED those chapter summary sentence grids this past year.  It was a easy graphic organizer that kept the kids responsible and paying attention to what we read together.  I already have them copied for all my read alouds for this coming year!

Popping In - Giveaway Over on FB

I really love summer!  My house is already cleaner than it usually is during the school year, my laundry is getting done when it should, and I've had adult conversation time with mom friends when my boys played at the park.

Since I have math pretty much covered for my own school year, I wanted to start making up more ELA ones for my future students.  I made up these Parts of Speech Task Cards this morning.  Students have to identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions while looking at a sentence.  I have really started LOVING the colored digital papers from I'm Lovin Lit, but I understand that sometimes it's too much color to print - so this pack has 2 options... each page with a background of color, and another one that is more ink friendly.

Here's how I use them in my own classroom:

I had a lot of technology themed things in class this past year between this, my Student Notebooks, and name tags.  The kids really enjoyed clipping up (not just down), and I enjoyed a chance to reward good behavior with the visual.
  
As for my Monthly Grammar Sheets, as you know coloring can be educational!  

My kiddos loved coloring these parts of speech sheets this past spring.  Great review for elementary school kids to identify nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, etc.  I started making them in March, and from there made an entire year.  Best compliment ever was from my student - I had printed the entire bunch of them to send off for this coming year and she asked if they were going to get to do all of them.  That made my day!
